Now the forums are "threaded", ie. you need to actually
select specific message to which you want to reply and you
can make replies in unlimited depth, however, that is
not suggested.

Pros for this system is that you can more
easily see which messages you have read and not (read
messages are purple) and we can add view-counts for
messages also. And cons, well, this can make things a bit
more complicated. However, I could easily implement a
button using which you could enter "flat" mode once again.
