Shall we announce our intent to build a testplatform now with all of our ideas and with some concentration or do we just work on it secret, until we have something to show?

Definitely wait until it's ready / in a beta. If we announce that we're developing a testplatform (hmm, actually, we HAVE already announced that. some 1 year ago.) it will make potential fans confused. And hype sucks anyways.

I agree, no announcement. And even though I previously said "MUDs bore me", I think I'll join in ;)

I agree, there is no actual need to announce this public, and people would just start asking about development, where it ends, will there be a 3D or not etc.
However, we could implement the famous milestone system and announce there, that we are testing eg language system or game economics. There's still no need to confuse anybody with existence of some feature tester.
Hm, does this sound a bit fraudulent? ;)
And at the time we need ordinary beta testers, we can give out the engine to the anxious players.

Yes, everyone of the team can be beta testers then before we open it for public, if we're ever going to do that.
