i was wondering how much power gods will directly have in the game, like will some deity of good be able to just send a ray of light down to kill some murderer, or will the god do more of something like giving its followers quests to kill the murderer and maybe give them a special power to do it?

The basic idea is that gods are virtually powerless without their mortal followers who provide them power by worshipping, and that they act mostly by reacting to requests. Should a god receive excess power, which means that he receives more worship than requests of divine intervention, he can of course use his powers at his own discretion. However, the acts of lower gods are usually supervised by his superiors.
Of course, gods can and should communicate with their most loyal worshippers without limitation, and it can be expected that those who work on behalf of a god's agenda are rewarded by him if the god's power reserve allows.

The nicks of the team members are the names of the gods in most cases.
