Ranged combat

There has been nothing about missile weapons, slings, thrown items or blades. I just started to think my item list, so..

First: What will the ranged combat be like? How do you aim? Can you choose your aiming accuracy? Does the game engine the shooting or the player?

Second: What possible weapons there will be? Bows? Crossbows? Slings? Thrown daggers?

Third: How powerful the weapons will be? Normal longbow penetrates plate armour at med range. (140 - 170 m) Do we have such power? And also, one hit to head causes fatal IRL. One hit to unarmoured torso kills you in few minutes, if you get no aid. (Actually there should be discussion about weapon damages in common in some other thread; how realistic they will be)

Fourth: Can you throw items of any kind. (Maybe a bit OT but anyway)

1. I'm supposing ranged combat will be just your old point'n'click. Aiming accuracy is derived from the usual stuff (stats and abilities).

2. Anything is possible.
3. The original consensus from 1998 was that all damage is realistic - one ventilation hole is all it takes if you install it in the right spot. OTOH this would make good marksmen able to wipe out everyone and anyone with 100% death rate and 0% risk of being caught. Therefore projectile weapons should either a) be very very hard to use or b have a diluted damage rate.

4. If someone comes up with a good and generic physics system.

3. That is too right. IRL using a bow is very very hard. At short range with a small bow (say 10-20 m) it is quite hard to hit even to a stationary object, if it is as small as a head for example.

This is true especially when speaking non-master archers. One point have to be included: The master bowmen can hit stationary object at the range of 80-90 m with straight aim, if aiming carefully. So, let's make the bow need a long aiming in order to hit.

When speaking of moving objects, it is almost impossible to hit a range of 20-30 m or more to head for example. You just can't foretell where the target is when the arrow reaches it.

If you want to shoot with longbow to range of 100+ m you need to use arched shot. In this case you will never hit to a single human sized enemy. This can only be used against armies.

So, I say that using a bow should be very difficult but when mastered only diffucult and yet in any case extremely effective in damage.

the effectiveness should also be dependant on distance
(if you shoot someone with plate armour on from short distance, it may penetrate and cause heavy damage, but from far enough away it would likely be deflected, or at least not go in as far so that instead of skewering a leg and paralizing the guy, it would be more to the surface, and if you shot an arrow at a large creature (ie dragon, elephant, whatever), it would basically lodge itself in the outer muscle, not doing much, unless you hit a weaker spot (neck, head, etc.))
