Yes you should compile it. Especialy if you do not have a 3d card. Mesa wants to make static libraries if you don't have it and they don't seem to work with simbolic links. I have actually made a red hat howto on compiling the client and all the libraries perhaps you could try it out and see if it works for you the howto can be found here: ftp://ftp.majik3d.org/open/hook/misc/HOWTO-redhat6.0.txt hook hook@majik3d.org
